  • Stay clear of the landing path of approaching gliders.
  • After landing the pilot will move to the edge of the field. Please wait until pilots have cleared the field to approach!

Spectators on Chelan Butte

Launch Access

  • Drive up Chelan Butte Road from Lakeside to 47.8044, -120.0387. Chelan Butte Road is unimproved and its condition varies. High clearance and AWD/4WD is recommended. Do not drive the road when it is wet, as it can be slippery and you will damage it.
  • Launch can also be accessed via a hike.
  • Due to extreme fire danger that is common during flying season, the Washington Department of Natural Resources has the following requirements:
    • All vehicles driving up the Butte must carry a shovel and a minimum 10/BC fire extinguisher.
    • Drivers must not drive off the road or park over vegetation.
    • Fires and smoking are strictly prohibited on launch.
  • Parked vehicles must display a Washington State Discover Pass (available online and at several local stores including Safeway).
  • Parked vehicles should not obstruct the upper loop road. Park on the gravel or mowed areas behind the launch area.

Spectating

  • Ask before touching any paragliding or hang gliding gear, even if it looks like the pilot needs help.
  • Remain clear of pilots who are setting up to launch. It’s best to stay uphill.
  • Be aware that pilots must concentrate while performing their final safety checks and preparing to launch.
  • Chelan Butte is known for dust devils, which can be very powerful in the spring and summer. If any equipment is threatened by a dust devil, DO NOT attempt to subdue it as you may put yourself at risk.
